Mrs. Carter's Class
Grade 3/4
This morning, after our morning cursive writing, the boys got right to work reviewing and learning about division. They were so proud to realize that once they know one multiplication fact, they actually know two division facts. We completed a worksheet and played an individual game to practice our facts. In Lanuage Arts, we worked on another type of figurative language, similes. We played a game to add similes to our sentences and watch how much more detailed they turned out! The boys completed their own similes using given words such as cloud, rain and car. It was quite interesting to see what they came up with!
This afternoon, after our Daily Five centers, we read another chapter from our class novel, Hatchet. The survival discussions that are arising from this story are awesome! The boys completed their chart comparing different animals hearing as the end to our day! A friendly reminded tomorrow is the Zoo trip. Please come dressed for the weather! Hats and gloves are strongly recommended. See you all tomorrow! Mrs. Carter

How did I grow today?
- We did Mission Impossible in gym - We started learning a out food in our 4 countries - In the morning, we learned how to do handwriting - I drew a really good picture of a werebear - In gym, we pretty much only did talking so that we knew what to do on Mission Impossible - We got a new thing in Daily Five where there centres - Today only played a little bit of mission impossible, we will learn the rest tomorrow That was a fun day!
After our last Math morning routine, we completed our Math check-in for the week. We are now moving on from area, perimeter and volume. The boys were then introduced to a new Math website where they were given time to complete their placement test. I think they enjoyed it! In Language Arts, we were discussing how to pull key information from a large piece of text or from a video. The boys read an article from CTV news about the 'World's Worst Cat'. We pulled out the key information that we thought was important. The boys then compared what they gathered with the video news story about the same cat. It was quite well done! This afternoon, after Daily Five, we went on a survival challenge to introduce ourselves to our new class novel, Hatchet. The boys were on a sinking ship and there is a desert island up ahead but they can only bring four items with them. Once they chose their items, I gave them a scenario of things that would happen on their island and they had to discuss how they could now survive with their chosen items. We had a good chuckle. We then read the first chapter of Hatchet. I think this will be a good one! The boys had a nice day and earned a few minutes of free time at the end. Please take the time to read through the report card comments with your son. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out. Reminder....PD Day tomorrow. Enjoy your long weekend! How did I grow today? - We had scenarios with a sheet and we tried to figure out how to survive - We read a book about a guy that was really scared (Hatchet) - Today in the gym, Mr. Stanley did another exercise and also we were allowed to go to the climber - We also did our how to survive activity - Today in LA we read about the world's worst cat - We learned a cool new website called Prodigy Mrs. Carter This morning, after morning routine, we got right to work finishing up our cereal boxes! The boys finished the designing, calculating and creation of their boxes. Once they were done, the boys calculated the total volume of the box as well as wrote a quick blurb answering the question "why should I buy this cereal?" Interesting....
This afternoon, after reading time, the boys were given their next task in their trips around the world! After they found their flights yesterday, the cost of flight and distance to travel to their country, today they were responsible for finding the official languages of their country. They were also asked to write 2-3 sentences about the capital city in their country. The boys looks at a bunch of pictures to determine the answers to these questions. The boys who were able to complete their questions in the time given, were allowed to cash in their earned their free time. Great day! How did I grow today? - Today we made cereal boxes - In gym we had a substitute - Today we were looking for information about our countries - We had some free time today! - We looked up Tunisia information - Today when we were doing our countries, some of us didn't finish because we couldn't find the right information Mrs. Carter How did I grow today?
- We were booking flights - Today we were making little cereal boxes in math - We did gymnastics in gym - I'm going to Disneyland - I read Scratch the book - When we were booking flights, me and my partner booked a private jet What a Monday! This morning, after our morning routine, we discussed how to measure volume. We learned what a 3d shape is and how the third dimension is what we use to calculate volume. The boys practiced a couple of examples together and then got busy building shapes and calculating their volume. I was impressed to see how quickly they grasped the concept! We took some time to finish up our chess and checkers boards as well as challenge a classmate to a game. This afternoon, we began our travel around the world by discussing four different countries we are traveling to this year. The boys were put into groups, and located their countries on the maps connecting Calgary to our new location. We then took the time to recreate our flags of the country we are traveling to. Tomorrow, we will begin our trip by creating our flight plan and our boarding passes.
How did I grow today? - We learned about different countries - Today in Math we counted cubes and me and my friends made a great pyramid - My friend and me made castles with blocks - We learned volume in math - I made two Scotland flags....and am still working on one. Mrs. Carter How did I grow today?
- For math we made a playground that we are not finished - We watched a video talking about things that make us happy and sad (quality of life) - In Social studies, we did our quality of life - Today in gym, we played 'Tip the Turtle' - At the end of the day we got to have some free time - Me & Mrs Carter Great day! It went so fast! This morning, after morning routine, we started our final area/perimeter project; designing a playground. The boys were given 6 different structures and their dimensions that they were asked to create. Tomorrow, we will begin building our favorite structure that has to fit into our full size playground. (Secret given here....our next step in math is capacity and volume...we are going to use our structures to introduce that concept). In Language Arts, we took our Idioms that we learned yesterday and turned them into real life stories. For example, the boy who lived in a pickle (because he was 'stuck in a pickle'). These are really becoming hilarious and are including multiple idioms!!
This afternoon, after reading, we started our around the world travels in Social Studies by learning all seven continents and their locations in the world. The boys labelled and coloured their maps. Tomorrow, we are going to discuss what quality of life is and how it can be different in other parts of the globe. The boys earned a bit of free time today and enjoyed some coding time on Scratch. Great day, gentlemen!! How did I grow today? - We made a map of the 7 continents - In gym, we were on a line on the gym floor and we had to push our partner off the line - In Math, we started our floor plan for our playground - In LA, we made posters of idioms Mrs. Carter We had a great Monday! This morning, after morning routine, we reviewed perimeter quickly and focused our time then on area. The boys completed a quick worksheet (either challenge or super challenge) and then had a couple of options: play Area Tetris or multiplication chess and checkers. In Language Arts, we finished our persuasive letters to Mr. Sprong, convincing him of a rule or idea that we would like to see changed at the All-Boys. Some fabulous ideas are coming out! I'm super hopeful to see one or two change Mr. Sprong's mind!
This afternoon, after Daily Five, we watched a summary of the real life of Ivan. As our novel is now complete, and Ivan was known as quite the artist, we created a mixed media art piece of our favorite part of the novel. Finally, the boys were given a bit of time to finish up their Scratch interactive poster of gorilla facts. We will hopefully go on a gallery walk tomorrow to view each other's posters. How did I grow today? - We had a lot of fun - Today we played octopus at gym and also did our gorilla art - We researched how to draw gorillas - We had recess time for the first time in a week because last week it didn't get above -20 Mrs. Carter How did I grow today?
