Mrs. Carter's Class
Grade 3/4
The boys had another busy and productive day! This morning, after our cursive writing, we labelled the polygons that we put into our geometric overlapping art project yesterday. Ask me what a polygon is! We then build pyramids and prisms so that tomorrow we can examine their similarities and differences.
In Language Arts, we wrote a short story that was created based on a title that someone else gave me. What a silly little writing task that turned into some super creative stories! We then spent some time with Sasha, our guest speaker who taught us about diversity and how to speak to people with disabilities. This afternoon, after Daily Five, we learned about the purposes of the four main parts of a plant and then researched a native plant/tree/shrub to our region of Alberta that we had created. Tomorrow, we will create our plant that we studied and add it into the ongoing project! A few reminders: - we need a box for our Hatchet diorama project please. Anything from your recycle bin works! (shoe box, cereal box, etc). - Alvin Law is speaking with us tomorrow and we are super lucky to learn from him! Please join us at 10:30 in the gym if you can! Thanks so much! Mrs. Carter

We had another great week!
Today, the boys did a check in with equations involving a missing number. It was very well done and next week, we move into geometry! After Phys. Ed, the boys presented their projects on the four countries; Peru, Tunisia, Ukraine and India. It was great to see the comfort in getting up in front of their classmates and speaking. Well done! Next week, we will go back through the countries and discuss quality of life in each compared to Canada. The boys then had some time to finish up the items that did not get completed this week. If you see a red duotang in your child's backpack, they've got a little homework to do. :) Friendly reminders: - If you have not returned your signed report card envelope or IPP please do so as soon as possible. - The boys are growing and burning more energy with the increasing better weather. Please continue to pack a few extra snacks to help us get through the day. Have a great weekend! Mrs. Carter Today we worked on decreasing patterns both visually and with numbers. The boys did a great job recognizing the pattern rules. In Language Arts, we continued to review our song choices, looking for metaphors, similes and idioms. It was amazing how many there were that we didn't even notice!
This afternoon, after Daily Five centres, we read another chapter of Hatchet. It is getting so close to the end of Brian's journey. The boys were given a bit of time to work on completing their country projects. These will be presented on Friday. Great day, boys! Mrs. Carter We had a quick, but productive Friday. The boys began the day with a quick review of patterns using t-charts. This morning we had Chad, an independent comic book writer, come in and share with the boys what it takes to write and publish comic books. It was very insightful to showing the way that he storyboards and plot summarizes his ideas before even putting them into graphics. We are hoping to collaborate on a project going forward.
The boys had some catch up time after gym, which allowed them to complete any unfinished work from the week. After our learning celebration, we had our weekly wrap up, Kudoos and then classroom cleaning. All in all, a great day! Have a fabulous weekend. How did I grow today? - We had a comic book author come in and tell us everything he knows about making and publishing comics. - I got a new pet named Trip Trop in Prodigy - In Math, we did t-charts and patterns - We had a sub gym teacher today and we did octopus tag - We also did Battleship in gym Mrs. Carter This morning, after morning routine, the boys worked through a series of word problems that practiced their t-chart making skills. Most boys attempted to solve the problems using mental math but quickly figured out that using the t-chart allowed them to keep track of the pattern. Success was then easily found!
We have a special comic book artist coming in on Friday to speak with the boys and so in Language Arts, we began our personal comic book to share with him. This afternoon, after Daily Five and Hatchet, we continued building our presentations of our countries. The boys were shown two examples of what a great presentation would look like and were given a checklist of things they should be making sure are in their presentations. Most of the boys took the suggestions and worked hard with it. One particular group got to quickly share their excellent job with the class. Well done! Tomorrow is Spring picture day! The boys are permitted to wear the outfit of their choosing so as to have a very dashing picture taking. Have a wonderful night! Mrs. Carter What a great flexible thinker day!
This morning, after our morning routine, the boys began learning about patterns and using t-charts to determine the pattern rule. We created the first three stages of our own patterns and left the last two stages for Mrs. Carter to try and complete. Some of our patterns are pretty creative! In Language Arts, we completed our good copies of our Limericks from yesterday as well as completed a kindness project. We completed a picture which stated two things I can do to make the world a better place. We then went to listen to our guest speaker, Sasha. She comes to us from the Visibility program. Sasha has Cerebral Palsy and epilepsy. She was a wonderful, positive speaker who taught us about diversity and inclusion of different disabilities. This afternoon, we did our Daily Five centres, read Hatchet and then had Gym. What a great day! How did I grow today? - Today we had a guest speaker during our normal gym time so we had to go to gym at 1:45 and we were the last gym class of the day - In Language Arts, we did how I can save the world with my two hands - When the guest speaker came, we did some activities that were really fun and hard. - We had to figure out what kinds of disabilities other students had on a cruise ship - I was the only one in my Daily Five group today - In Math we did blocks, creating Math patterns (T-Charts) - Tomorrow is PINK SHIRT DAY!! - In Language Arts, we also had to finish up our Limericks - We had indoor morning recess How did I grow today?

We had a great day. This morning, we finished up learning about dangerous decimals through the virtual exhibit website. The boys did a great job logging their information! In Math, we took a break from worksheets and completed a 3-act math riddle and a TedEd riddle. The strategies that these young men are coming up with for problem solving are amazing! Well done! In fact, I think almost the whole class solved the chocolate bar riddle!!
After daily five, we read another chapter of Hatchet. This afternoon, we created a valentine art project, that will hopefully make its way home, all the while handing out our own valentines that we brought in. It was a nice day! Wishing you a warm long weekend! Reminder that us teachers are off to convention tomorrow and Friday so there is no school. Monday is, of course, the Family Day holiday as well. Enjoy! See you Tuesday! Oh...and Happy Valentine's Day! How did I grow today? - Today we handed out our Valentine's Day gifts and we also did the last day of Mission Impossible - In Science, we did hearing - I helped clean up the mission impossible - We made stuff like sculptures and cards and pictures that we drew - We did Ted eds in Math - Tomorrow and Friday we do not have school - Monday is also Family Day! Mrs. Carter Today's cursive writing letter was the letter F. The boys are beginning to catch on to some of the words that have been written in our daily morning message! After morning routine, we reviewed fact families and completed a practice worksheet. The boys then played a game there they rolled a dice, creating two factors, and had to complete the fact family that would work with their numbers!
In Language Arts, we reviewed similes and learned about metaphors. The boys read some simple sentences where they had to identify if it was an example of a simile or metaphor. Once completed they were able to write some of their own. Did you know that one student has a principal that was a bear! (Great metaphor!) This afternoon, we read another chapter of Hatchet. In Science, we learned about the noise level and decibels. We discussed how certain sounds can cause hearing damage or loss over certain periods of time. We practiced working for 10 mins to see if we stayed in the low risk hearing damage category....we did pretty good! Not a lot of free time was awarded today, but we did have some super stars during our lock-down practice and during our end of the day clean up! Thank you boys! How did I grow today? - We did some Hatchet and the main guy thinks that search and rescue is going to come - This was the fourth day of mission impossible and it was really, really fun - In Science, we did a hearing test - In Math today, we did fact families and we did a game and you roll a dice and write the two numbers down into fact family - In Language arts we compared similes and metaphors - Today we did mission impossible again and it was the first time I was a really good spy - Today we only have 5 points left on free time Mrs. Carter How did I grow today? - It was the third day of mission impossible in gym - We did Prodigy time on our computers - We did division and multiplication fact families in Math - Yesterday we went to the zoo and learned about Ivan - We had catch-up time and some people were done everything - We had a math check-in and morning routine Math and we finished the morning routine cursive writing Mrs. Carter |
