Happy snowy Monday!
This morning we discussed what life would be like without technology. What a discussion....made me chuckle. We moved quickly into Math addition up to 4-digirs with regrouping. After a fun interactive lesson, the boys demonstrated their understanding in a quick worksheet. This afternoon, we got busy typing up the very first, very rough, draft of our monster stories. It will take us a bit of time to finish this step before we can do our good copy and share. Stay dry! Mrs. Carter

Happy Friday!
After our morning routine, the boys took some time to complete their personal 'to-do list'. Any items that have not been completed this week, time was granted to finish them up. When they were completed, the boys were able to build some more on their Rube Goldberg machines. Today was our celebration of learning and as a class we decided to show a video of all the things we have been working on this year so far. I was so proud of their confidence to come up in front of their peers and speak. Thank you too all the gentlemen who took the time to stay in this week during lunches and create our video as well. It was a team effort! Finally, we ended the day with our weekly wrap-up; an opportunity to share anything exciting they brought in or having going on in their lives. Another chapter of Inkling was read and we are off for the weekend! Stay warm and dry. See you Monday. Mrs. Carter What a productive day! We worked hard on our monster stories this morning. We completed our drawings and 'monster mapped' our traits such as looks, what our monster eats, where it lives and how it speaks. Once that was completed, the boys shared their descriptions with a classmate. What a great way to get some feedback on their description!
Math today was learning a new classroom game, Around the World. J almost made it all the way around!! Later on this morning, we ran our Terry Fox run! Good work boys! But Mrs. Carter sure out ran you! :) In Science, we found everyday examples of the six simple machines and continued to plan our Rube Goldberg designs. Students are encouraged to bring in any materials from home they need to help with their building! How did I grow today? - We had our Terry Fox run -We continued building and designing our Rube Goldberg machines - We set up the course for Terry Fox run and we worked on our monster stories - We researched about Rube Goldberg and we found real life examples of screw, inclined planes, lever, pulley, wheel and axle and wedges - We earned some 'me' time! Tomorrow is our Learning Celebration! Please join us at 11am in the gym to see how we have been growing as a class this year! Mrs. Carter Fundraising is open until October 4th!
https://secure.terryfox.ca/registrant/TeamFundraisingPage.aspx?TeamID=881282#&panel1-1 This morning we got busy designing and planning our Rube Goldberg machines. Each machine must have 3 simple machines and 2 energy transfers. The boys took some time today to research what all of the possible simple machines are. We then put together a list of materials we may need to complete this task. Finally, we grabbed a computer and did some online research with our groups; taking a look a other homemade Rube Goldberg machines, Lego machines etc.
This afternoon, after daily reading, we began Social Studies by talking about all of the regions in Alberta we will be learning about. We met six Albertans in our textbook who shared their background with us. We then completed our own speech bubble picture talking about where we came from and our special traditions. Time slipped by and the boys did not get to answer our daily question. Please note, Terry Fox run is tomorrow at 2pm as well, our class is presenting at the learning celebration this Friday at 11am. See you all tomorrow! Mrs. Carter What a great day! Today we began designing our monsters in Language Arts. Tomorrow we will take the time to use post-it notes to pull together some of the pieces of our monsters; what they eat, where they live, how they smell, etc. In Science we discussed our Rube Goldberg machines and all of the things we need to build our very own. The boys have been asked to begin bringing in any supplies from home to aid in their design process.
How did I grow today? - We made cool art, read Inkling - Created number 4 of Brick Rigs! - We worked on Rube Goldberg machines - I got a new chair to sit on and a new wrist band to chew on - We had library today! - We watched examples of Rube Goldberg machines Mrs. Carter Happy Monday!
We got busy this morning with some Math card games. This gave us a chance to chat while getting back into the routine of school. Having a long weekend is so hard to come back from. :) In Language Arts, we discussed what is required to be a great descriptive writer. We listened to the story of 'Kerplunk' and drew what we thought this alien monster looked like based on his description. Tomorrow we will compare eachother's pictures and take a peak at the actual Kerplunk. In Science, we took a break from our Biodome structures and discussed Rube Goldberg's famous inventions. We learned that they are machines that use simple machines to do work. Although...they are inefficient, overcomplicated and hilarious...but they get the job done. Time was given to begin brainstorming our personal Rube Goldberg machines as well as conferencing with Mrs. Carter about our bridge designs. Phew....that was a solid day! How did I grow today? - We began to create Rube Goldberg machines - We watched videos of Rube Goldberg creations - I created my third comic - We started our monster stories by listening to the story of 'Kerplunk' See you tomorrow! Mrs. Carter :) Today we worked through another practice of how we can demonstrate our numbers. The boys played a game of Greater than or Less than with a partner. In LA, we had some time to complete another written comic or book. They are loving it and their creativity keeps growing! This afternoon, we took a bit more time to finish up our bridge designs and attended our weekly celebration of learning hosted by the 4/5 class. Next week will be ours.
Have a wonderful long weekend! How did I grow today? - We finished building our Kinex bridges - We had a rough day but we found our way through it! - We worked on writing Mrs. Carter What a great day! This morning we learned three different ways that we can show a number; expanded form, standard form and using base ten blocks. In Language Arts, we built up our vocabulary by being introduced to vocabulary ladders. It was a fun puzzle way to learn how to spell simple words. In Science this afternoon, we got busy!! In learning about structures, designs and shapes, we pulled out the Kinex kits to try our hand at building a bridge strong enough to hold Mrs. Carter's water bottle. All groups had amazing designs and tomorrow we will journal about why we did what we did with our bridges. We were so busy cleaning up and building this afternoon, the boys did not have a second to share their answers to "How did I grow today?" Be sure to ask your learner at home tonight!
Friendly reminder of Meet the Teacher night tomorrow (Thursday) from 5-8pm. Come on in and see what's been going on in room 1. Hope to see you all then. Mrs. Carter What a productive day! We worked on completing our onomatopoeia comic strip; some of us choosing to update our current version to a more colourful and detailed one. These look great! In Math, we learned about the patterns in a basic 2x2 Sudoku board. We will be allowed to work on these when we are completed our in-class assignments. This afternoon we had library and took some time to do our daily five reading to self/someone there. With the interest in reading this afternoon, I'd say we signed out some good books! The last bit of the day was to complete our comic strips and our Science biodome designs that we began yesterday. Well done, boys!
How did I grow today? - I've made a Brick Rigs comic part two! - I released a new book called 'The Trash' in full colour - We made our own things out of cardboard - Sukodu was what we did in Math today - I was able to get books at the library - We were at the gym and running and taking playing cards for Terry Fox Please don't forget any library books that are now due. Have a good night! Mrs. Carter |
