Mrs. Carter's Class
Grade 3/4
Our morning routine was a juicy one and led us into a wonderful classroom discussion. Given a picture of what appeared to be a shipwreck, we were asked to draw/describe what happened after or before the storm. What great observations! This week's community helper is Muhammad. Thank you Hudson for your help last week. In Science, we discussed our large question that the grade 3/4 engineer class (us) has been tasked with creating, "How do we keep sunlight on our plants in the biodome all winter?" After our well deserved extra recess, we partnered up and brainstormed some fabulous ideas! Ideas such as a disco solar ball on a drill that will reflect light off of a flashlight to reach all of the plants and a wind powered light. Amazing! Next up, we will build some prototypes of these wonderful designs.
In Language Arts, we learned what an onomatopoeia is! What better way to learn? Watch a few clips of 1980's Batman and Robin episodes. The boys are now creating their own comic strips that have examples of onomatopoeias in them. Some students are working together to create a mini-series of comic strips! Love it! While today was a busy and talkative day, we always end on a good note. Reminder to each other how lucky we are to share this space and to respect this learning environment. Good things happened here today! How did I grow today? - Talked about how to bring the biodome back to life - We made a book/comic strip that had to have onomatopoeia in it - We watched an old Batman series which taught us onomatopoeia - We earned our extra recess today! Go grey and blue knights! Mrs. Carter

Where did that day go? Phew. This morning we worked on our biography poems about our classmates. We took the information from our interview yesterday and put it into full sentences today. Tomorrow.....we will make our friend a piece of art! In Math, we filled in a place value chart with pictures of items we could count in each place value. For example, we can count all the animals in the world in groups of 1000s. This afternoon in Science, we tested triangle vs. square shapes and quickly discovered that triangles have more strength. Ask me how to make a square stronger? We tested that too! When we were all done, there was fifteen minutes left to use as STEM creation time. Boy, this class is creative!
How did I grow today? - We built boats during our STEM time - We found out that triangles are the strongest shapes - We made a Place Value chart in Math - We had our missing student from yesterday back today Have a great night! Mrs. Carter :) Another great day! Our morning routine was filled with excitement for our morning Stem challenge (how would I be-friend a garden gnome). We had some interesting debates such as "what treats would you use to lure a gnome out of its home?" In Math, we discussed being the mayor of Place Value town and meeting the residence of the ones, thousands and even millions houses. Once we were confident, we played the game 'Greatest Value' and tested our understanding of these place values. In Science, we watched a structures video and completed a worksheet to build our 'engineering' vocabulary. This afternoon, after Daily Five, we learned the difference between autobiography and biography. We then were put into partners and asked to interview each other with the intent of creating a biography about our classmate in the coming days! We learned some interesting things about each other!
How did I grow? - We played some new games in gym - I learned how to get over being hit in the arm with a soccer ball - I made comic books - I let my classmates read my book - We played Math games - I learned my friend likes to draw Please remember your forms! Mrs. Carter :) We had a busy day working together on a variety of activities! We looked at different ways to group items to help us when counting larger numbers. In Science, we took what we learned yesterday about structures and materials and completing a tricky design task. Using only four sheets of paper, we needed to hold up a Math text book! Ask your child what their design was! Some really great ideas were shared. During Daily Five, we went to the library to be reminded of our routines and schedule with Mrs. March. Every Tuesday, will be library day for the first few months of school.
How did I grow? - Me and my friends are creating a book club! - We went to the gym and the library - We read some books - We read a classmate's homemade book - We took books out of the library - We built some cool structures Have a great night! Mrs. Carter How did I grow today?
- We did graffiti art - In Science we made a vase for fake flowers that had to withstand wind! - We watched a video about a gentleman who created an amazing structure with toothpicks - We read a new book called The Twits! - We played Zoo, bandaid and hot dog tag in gym - We made it through the first week back to school! The boys had a fabulous week, taking the time to get to know each other and learning about our classroom expectations. Today was a short day but we took the time to observe the changes that occurred in our biodome over the summer. Using our visual journals, we drew and wrote what we saw. Using this information, we can start to make a plan of the things that need to be fixed or built to begin another successful biodome.
We also read the book "What Do You Do With an Idea?" and discussed how important it will be to encourage ourselves and each other through this year. Finally, we had our first learning celebration led by Mr. Baustad. We discussed any new changes to our daily routines as well as new faces to help with all our students. How did I grow today? - I grew by sharing my cool lego creation with the class - I was doing drawing in my visual journal - We read 'what do you do with an idea?' Have a restful weekend! Mrs. Carter I can't believe how focused we were this morning! It was just an awesome, respectful classroom space. We completed our morning routine, shared during our morning meeting, introduced how our visual journals will work this year and had an opportunity to play some math card games. This afternoon was a bit busier with building our stamina in our Daily Five and a design challenge of building a catapult out of select materials. We have been taking our time building routines and getting to know each other as learners this week! I'm so proud of some of the positive comments and encouragement I'm hearing towards each other.
How did I grow today? - We drew in our visual journals! - I played soccer for the first time in a long time! - I got to see my classmate's spider - We build catapults in our design challenge - We had gym and played revenge tag and caterpillar - KJ tried to tackle me in soccer but I'm so fast he couldn't catch me - We played cards with our teammates in Math See you tomorrow! Reminder, dismissal is at 12pm tomorrow! It's Friday! :) Mrs. Carter What another successful and fun day! We continued to time learning about our morning routine. Each day we will be introduced to a 'Mystery Stem Challenge' and asked to design our ideas. We also worked on a silly, get to know you, challenge where we took our worksheets around the classroom and completed task cards. Some of them required us to sing, some to stand in a silly pose and some to calculate equations! We finally had Phys. Ed with Mr. Stanley!
This afternoon, we learned how our class will do Daily 5; focusing on Reading to Self/Read to Someone and building our stamina. We could do a solid one minute today! Not bad. :) How did we grow today? - We learned about TedEd (Math riddles). Ask me about it! - Today was the first day of gym!! - I learned by reading new books that I really, really liked! - I kept myself hydrated - We played revenge tag in gym - We got to play soccer at recess - We had fun! - I liked reading. See you all tomorrow! Mrs. Carter What a fabulous first day! We got busy first thing discussing our morning routines and classroom expectations. After reading the book "We Are Gardeners", we focused on how we can grow as learners and how we will grow each day together. Here's what some of the 3/4s had to say about today!
How did I grow today? - Making the marble tracks - Winning and having fun - Doing the "We are the Gardeners" book - Celebrating - I''m proud of how much work I put into the games and it would be a bummer if someone broke these because we worked on them lots! - We had fun! We had some reading time and were as quiet as a ninja! - Making an awesome paper plate pin-ball machine with lava. See you all tomorrow. Mrs. Carter This year will be filled with adventures, challenges and fun! I look forward to watching you grow and develop the confidence to be a critical thinker in your learning. |
