Happy Halloween!!
Today was a great day filled with excitement and fun. This morning we worked on our genius hour projects and some really cool things started to emerge. Things like stop motion photography, origami infinity boxes, and testing paper airplane designs. On Monday, we will finish up and share what we have learned with the class. This afternoon, we worked through a Math mystery: The Case of the Super Bad Superhero. Solving different clues which allowed us to eliminate suspects, the boys tried to figure out who is the super bad superhero. We got close, but no one solved it in time. Answer....will be revealed on Monday! Our Grade 5/6's learning celebration was this afternoon as well. Amazing day! Have a wonderful and safe evening. Reminder, NO SCHOOL TOMORROW. As well, if you have not returned your field trip forms for the zoo on November 7th, please do so first thing Monday morning!! Mrs. Carter

This is one of those days where you don't realize all you did until you blog! The boys had a great day and got busy with tons of activities. This morning, we introduced the topic of Genius Hours. The boys were given the guidelines of what they are working on and then given time to start researching and learning about their topic. Tomorrow, I will narrow their search to specific, grade appropriate topics (such as creating a Scratch project or a claymation video).
This afternoon we built prototypes of our structures for the biodome. Some amazing ideas!! How did I grow? - Ms. Jessica came today - We tried to make our own game in Genius Hour - In Science we built our prototype of our structures we are going to use to in the bio-dome to keep light on the plants - We went to gym and did Basketball - We got some Epic time - I missed half the day! - We had intramurals - We did not go outside :( - My group made light structure spin tops for Science - Tomorrow is Halloween! Mrs. Carter Today was fun! We took our Math stores we created yesterday and practiced regrouping our numbers and purchasing items. The boys were each given a random amount of coins. They needed to purchase items from other classmates, but they needed to pay in exact change! If they needed change for a coin, they would come to the bank of Mrs. Carter and let me know what they required. For example, if they wanted to buy something that was 17cents, but they only had a quarter, they could come and regroup the quarter for a dime, nickel and ten pennies. Same amount of money, but different way of grouping it....and now they could buy their 17cent item. We had fun with it! Tomorrow, we will take the amount of money we earned and spend and use those numbers to practice writing our Math equations.
In the second part of Math, I introduced the boys to Sumdog.com. It's a Canadian curriculum based math website which was great for reviewing some basic concepts. Today was the diagnostic assessment day...from here, questions can be assigned according to their personal levels. The best part...they can play against each other. Nothing like challenges. Daily five we started our word study for the week; Long vowels. Finally, we read on Epic.com. You will see a field trip form in your child's backpack! Please sign and return for Thursday at the latest please! How did I grow today? - We read on epic.com - We did more basketball in gym - We learned about Math on sumdog.com - Me and a classmate made a new paper monster - We shopped in our homemade Math stores Mrs. Carter Well....another Monday is done. We got busy this morning talking about regrouping in Math and to practice some basic regrouping skills, we are creating a store. Each boy was asked to put 10 items in their store that was priced less than $1. Tomorrow, they will begin with a 'loan' from Mrs. Carter. Each item they buy will have to be purchased with exact change; requiring them to borrow and regroup their coins (ex. changing a dime for ten pennies to pay for an item that is 38 cents). It should be interesting!
In Language Arts, we continued with our Novel Study bingo demonstrating our understanding of this novel, Inkling. These projects will be completed by Thursday. This afternoon, we took apart all of our K'nex pieces in preparation for our light structures that we are building for the Bio-dome. These will be finished this week, and the actual building should begin on Monday (fingers crossed). When we finally were able to clean up our classroom, the boys who earned it got to read on Epic. Those who did not, got to read a book. How did I grow today? - We had staff vs. student dodgeball - We took apart all of our K'nex pieces to make our prototypes for our bio-dome light structures - In gym we started basketball - We did more novel study bingo - We made our own stores in Math to practice subtraction - I lost Papie - We had Epic time **Please watch for Zoo parent letter and permission form that will be sent home tomorrow. These need to be returned by Thursday! No fees required...thank you Parent Council! Mrs. Carter What an action packed day! Today we did all things "Inkling". We completed the novel read aloud as a class and had a good chat about the ending of the book. The boys were then able to begin working on their novel study bingo. It's an opportunity to demonstrate their understanding in a variety of ways! They have a bingo board filled with choices such as, write a new ending to the novel, or create a new bookcover and explain why yours is great. They were asked to chose three items and create them! We got busy spending the morning creating.
At the same time, the boys cut out their hand prints and glued them onto our class pumpkin. It looks amazing!!! I hope you will come tonight and make a big bid on it! This afternoon was finishing up our weekly word study, creating our novel study file folder and then were went on Code.org. Phew....see you all at the Howler! How did I grow today? - I made a book club called "The Jawbreakers" - I made this cool TV thing called the "Papie Tv" - We made an Inkling - We played full court handball - We began our novel study bingo - We had a chance to go on Code.org - Before we went on Code.org, we had to finish our weekly word study and put our names on our bingo folder - We decorated our pumpkin for the Howler Mrs. Carter How did I grow today?
- We had intermurals and it was the best intermurals yet! - We went on Epic.com - We created our pumpkin for the Halloween Howler - We finished our listing for our Haunted Houses - I made mine look like it was written in blood! - My haunted house has a deep basement with a sewer - Our Farkle tournament continues - I am a champion, winning four times and losing twice - We did our weekly word study - The Halloween Howler is tomorrow! How did I grow today?
- We had knights training in gym Phew....that Friday was fast. :) We worked on some subtraction review this morning and then had a quick quiz to check our understanding. After recess, we finished up this week's Word Study activities and ended the day with a bit of coding on Code.org. Have a fabulous weekend! - This was the last day of the first week of our teams for recess - We went on Code.org - We used our computers - Recess was fun - We finished our first week of word study - We wrote a Math stump the teacher and quiz Mrs. Carter What an action packed day!! I didn't realize until we blogged at the end of the day how many things we did today! The boys worked hard on creating a visual storyboard for their Monster stories. I asked them, "if we turned your monster story into a movie, what would it look like?" Once completed, we took some time to read on Epic.com. After our learning celebration this morning, we watched Mr. Stanley, Ms. Patsy and Mr. Baustad get pied in the face! What a good chuckle.
This afternoon in Social, we added another layer to our regions of Alberta in our saltdough creations. We discussed what each region should look like and some of the key features that need to be included. They are starting to look great! Finally, we discussed what we would like to do for a class pumpkin at the Halloween Howler next week! What creative ideas we have! These will get started tomorrow. :) How did I grow? - We drew pumpkins - We added to our salt dough regions - We storyboarded our Monster stories - We had our Thursday club lunch with Mrs. Carter - We had a second talk about our soccer teams at recess - We played 4 corner handball in gym - We put morning routine up and it was borrowed from the story of Inkling - We added more to our landforms that we were researching - We had fun in gym - We read our book, Inkling Mrs. Carter Another busy but great day! We started with a modified morning routine. As we begin our Word Study journey, the boys are now expected to copy the morning message into their morning routine books. From there, they answer the open ended question (sentence starter is provided). Today...where in the world Wednesday...where would you travel if you could go anywhere and why? I think we have some world travelers on our hands!
In Math, we began subtraction by looking at how estimation can help guide our answers. Letting us know if we are close, or far off of the actual answer. We used a Three-Act Math video to spark this conversation. The boys then played a subtraction game called Bump to 13. It encouraged simple mental math of addition and subtraction. This afternoon, we got caught up with a chapter of our read aloud, Inkling and then worked on our Word Study words. Our target for the last half of the afternoon was to build one (maybe two) of our Rube Goldberg simple machines. Some of the designs are quite amazing! A friendly reminder, if you have not already returned your signed IPP, please do so as soon as possible. The sooner I have them all in, the sooner we can get going on achieving our successful goals for the first part of the year. If you have questions or concerns, don't hesitate to let me know and I will happily book a time to discuss and collaborate. Also, school picture orders are due by Tuesday, October 23rd. Money and order forms can be brought in to our class. How did I grow? - We didn't start planning, we started building our Rube Goldberg machines - Ms. Jessica came and taught us about expected and unexpected behaviour - We played a new Math game, Bump to 13 :) Mrs. Carter |
